Our Recovery Story

On July 5, 2025, Sandy Creek changed forever.

A catastrophic flood tore through our community, destroying homes, businesses, farms, roads, vehicles, and livelihoods. Families lost everything they had built, and our neighbors lost loved ones. For many of us, the place we called home was suddenly unrecognizable.

But in the days and weeks that followed, something else became clear: Sandy Creek was not going to face recovery alone.

Neighbors showed up with chainsaws, trucks, tools, food, generators, and helping hands. Volunteers came from across Texas and beyond. People who had never met before began working side by side, clearing debris, checking on neighbors, finding resources, and helping families navigate the complicated process of rebuilding their lives.

Out of that response grew the Sandy Creek Alliance.

What began as neighbors helping neighbors became something bigger: a community organizing itself.

We learned that recovery is about more than rebuilding what was lost. It is about asking why communities are vulnerable in the first place—and what we can do together to make sure the next disaster doesn't have the same impact.

So we began advocating at every level.

Local advocacy

We have worked to bring attention to roads, bridges, low-water crossings, drainage, warning systems, and other infrastructure and public-safety concerns.

State advocacy

We have worked alongside partners and community members to advocate for policies and resources that help Texas communities recover and become better prepared for future disasters.

Federal advocacy

Sandy Creek survivors have traveled to Washington, D.C., met with members of Congress and their staff, and helped push for stronger disaster recovery programs and a better system for the people who will face the next disaster.

And we are doing it all from a community that is still rebuilding.

The work of recovery continues. But so does the work of building something better.

Sandy Creek Alliance is no longer simply responding to a disaster. We are building the relationships, knowledge, advocacy, and community infrastructure that will help Sandy Creek face whatever comes next.

Our recovery story is still being written.
And we are writing it together.
